What is Stellate Ganglion BLock (SGB)?

Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is a therapeutic procedure in which local anesthetic is injected near the stellate ganglion, a group of nerves located in the neck that plays a key role in regulating involuntary functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, and sweating. While SGB has long been recognized as an FDA-approved treatment for pain relief, it has recently gained attention for its ability to address symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. By targeting and regulating the overactive sympathetic nervous system, SGB help to “reset” the body’s stress response, restoring balance and providing significant relief from emotional and psychological distress. Experience the transformative effects of SGB for mental health and regain control over your well being.

Advanced SGB Treatment Protocol
What is Dual Sympathetic Reset (DSR SGB)?

The standard SGB procedure typically involves a single injection at the C4 level of the stellate ganglion. However, the Dual Sympathetic Reset (DSR SGB) protocol uses two injections, one at the C4 level and another at the C6 level, to enhance treatment outcomes for PTSD and anxiety symptoms. DSR SGB is generally performed on the right side of the neck, with a second injection on the left side if the patient does not achieve adequate results from the right-sided treatment.

How does DSR SGB work?

Some individuals remain stuck in a prolonged fight-or-flight response long after experiencing traumatic or stressful events. This state can lead to the development of extra nerve fibers in the brain, known as sprouting, which triggers persistent norepinephrine release. As a result, adrenaline floods the system, causing an overactive nervous system, increased heart rate, heightened alertness, and disturbances in sleep, mood, and memory–physical symptoms of trauma.

Our advanced Dual Sympathetic Reset (DSR) Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) protocol involves two injections of local anesthetic on one side of the neck, targeting a bundle of sympathetic nerves responsible for regulating the fight or flight response. This process works similarly to rebooting a computer, helping to restore normal biological function. DSR SGB has the potential to relieve even the most severe trauma symptoms, offering a powerful solution for emotional and psychological healing.

Why Choose a Bilateral SGB Instead of a Single SGB?

A Bilateral Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) involves treating both sides of the neck rather than just one. While a single SGB can provide significant benefits, there are specific reasons why someone might opt for a bilateral approach:

1. Symptom Coverage: Some conditions, like PTSD or anxiety disorders, may affect both sides of the body or brain. A bilateral SGB ensures more comprehensive relief by addressing the nerve centers on both sides.

2. Enhanced Effectiveness: In some cases, symptoms persist or are only partially relieved after a single SGB. Adding the second side can optimize the treatment’s impact.

3. Specific Conditions: Certain chronic pain syndromes, like complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), might benefit from bilateral SGB to fully address widespread or symmetrical pain.

4. Balancing Results: For some patients, treating one side alone could leave the other side overactive. A bilateral approach helps balance the nervous system for more consistent results.

At Revived Wellness in Houston, we offer expert guidance on whether a bilateral SGB or a single SGB is right for you. Our personalized approach ensures your treatment plan aligns with your specific needs and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) work for trauma and PTSD?

Yes. Stella’s Dual Sympathetic Reset (DSR), an advanced protocol of Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) treatment, has helped thousands of patients find lasting relief from their PTSD and trauma-related symptoms.

While studies show that 70% – 75% of SGB treatment participants experienced high rates of rapid clinical improvement in PTSD symptoms, Stella’s advanced DSR SGB protocol results in over 81% of clients finding relief from their PTSD symptoms.

Does Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) work for anxiety?

Yes, SGB has proven to relieve a cluster of anxiety symptoms like panic attacks, trouble sleeping, difficulty in concentration, agitation, etc.  A 2023 research based on a case series of 285 patients showed that dual-level Stellate Ganglion Block can effectively reduce anxiety symptoms by 50% measured by Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire (GAD-7) scores

How long does it take for DSR SGB to work?

The experience of relief after DSR SGB treatment varies by each patient and injection. Some patients notice benefits within 30 mins after the treatment, e.g. feeling an overall sense of calm and relaxation. For others, it may take up to 2 weeks to feel the full effect of the treatment.

How long do the positive effects of DSR SGB last?

The duration of the Stellate Ganglion Block’s positive effects varies from patient to patient, lasting months or years.

Does DSR SGB have any side effects?

Serious side effects of DSR SGB are extremely rare (1 in 10,000) because we hire seasoned, board certified MDs, train them in our field leading protocol and require that image guidance techniques are used for correct needle placement.

Directly after DSR SGB, you may temporarily experience various symptoms such as a droopy, bloodshot eye, warmth in your face and arm, and congestion. Nearly half of Stella’s patients experience hoarseness or trouble swallowing that resolves within 24 hours of the procedure.

Is DSR SGB covered by insurance?

DSR SGB treatment is not currently covered by insurance. At this time, insurance companies only cover the SGB when it’s used for pain management. All of our patients are considered self-pay. However, to help make treatment affordable, Stella accepts Health Savings Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), CareCredit and major credit cards as payment options.
